With Gods As Neighbours

we hear them
through the walls
the gods next door
always arguing

*

will it never end!
heavy footfall
of the god upstairs

*

the god next door
is frail
no problem
i'll put his bins out

*

does his business
on our lawn
the god next door
's cat

*

the old gods next door
all the knick-knacks
on the mantel
gathering dust

*

the old god sits
in the window waits
for the cheery nurse

*

the old god upstairs
when did his son
last visit

*

plagues, vengeance
the old god starts to tell a tale
we've heard before

*

he gazes
at a trophy
ah, in the old days
god was great
at smiting
